Why Did My QR Code Stop Working? (And How to Fix It)
A QR code that worked yesterday and fails today is almost never a scanning-app problem. Here are the five real causes, roughly in order of likelihood.
1. It was a trial dynamic code and the trial ended (most common)
Many "free" QR generators actually give you a dynamic code: a short link on their domain that redirects to your content. When your unnoticed free trial ends, they stop redirecting — and your printed code dies. This is the single most common complaint about the market-leading generator, whose Trustpilot rating is 1.4/5 across 9,000+ reviews (source).
Fix: if the destination never changes, reprint using a static code — it encodes your URL directly and cannot be switched off. If you need editability, use a dynamic provider thatpromises not to disable codes on cancellation.
2. The destination URL itself is dead
The code is fine, but the page it points to moved or was deleted. Scan the code and check where it lands.Fix: restore the page, or — with a dynamic code — just edit the destination.
3. Print quality or size
Codes printed too small (under ~2 × 2 cm), at low resolution, or with low contrast between foreground and background often fail. Fix: export at high resolution (our generator exports 2048px PNG and vector SVG/PDF), keep dark-on-light contrast, and leave a quiet zone (margin) around the code.
4. Too much data in a static code
Static codes storing a very long URL or full vCard become dense and hard to scan when printed small.Fix: shorten the URL, reduce the embedded data, or print larger.
5. Logo or styling destroyed the error-correction budget
A center logo covers part of the code; that's fine up to a point because of built-in error correction — but oversized logos or extreme styling break scanning. Fix: keep the logo under ~30% of the code area and use high error correction (our generator does this automatically when you add a logo).
How to never deal with this again
For anything permanent you print, use a static code from the free HonestQR generator. It never expires because it physically can't — no account, no trial, no server in the middle.
