QR code minimum size: how big to print for the distance it's scanned from
Most dead printed QR codes aren't broken — they're just too small for where they hang. The good news: sizing is arithmetic, not art. One rule covers everything from a business card to a billboard, with two corrections for data density and print quality.
The 10:1 rule
A QR code scans comfortably at up to roughly 10 times its own width. Flip it around: code width ≥ scan distance ÷ 10. A phone camera needs the code to fill enough of the frame to resolve individual modules, and at 10:1 that's reliably the case for a typical 25-module code on modern phones.
Size chart by placement
- Business card / product label — scanned in hand, 15–25 cm → 1.5–2.5 cm (0.6–1 in)
- Flyer, menu, table tent — 25–50 cm → 2.5–5 cm (1–2 in)
- Counter card, shelf talker — 50 cm → 5 cm (2 in)
- Poster in a hallway / shop window — 1–2 m → 10–20 cm (4–8 in)
- Window poster from the sidewalk — 2–3 m → 20–30 cm (8–12 in)
- Trade-show banner — 3–5 m → 30–50 cm (12–20 in)
- Billboard / vehicle wrap — 10 m+ → 1 m+ (40 in+) — and ask whether anyone can safely scan it at all
Treat these as minimums. Paper is cheap; a reprint after the run is not.
Correction 1: data density
The 10:1 rule assumes a low-density code (a short URL, version 2–3, 25–29 modules). More data means more, smaller modules at the same print size — and it's module size, not code size, that the camera must resolve:
- Short URL (~30 chars, v2–3): the chart above applies as-is.
- Long URL with UTM parameters (v5–6, 37–41 modules): add ~50% to the printed size — or better, shorten the URL.
- Full vCard (v8+, 49+ modules): double the chart values. This is why a vCard code on a business card should be 2 cm+ where a URL code gets away with 1.5 cm.
- WiFi credentials (v3–5): chart + ~25%, depending on password length.
Rule of thumb: keep each module at or above 0.5 mm in print for handheld scanning (a 25-module code + quiet zone at 0.5 mm/module ≈ 1.65 cm — matching the chart).
Correction 2: real-world print conditions
- Quiet zone: the 4-module white border is part of the minimum size. Cropping it is the #1 self-inflicted scan failure.
- Curved surfaces (bottles, cups): add 25–30%, and keep the code under ~25% of the circumference. More in the packaging guide.
- Behind glass / laminated: glare effectively reduces contrast — go one size up and use matte finishes (see retail windows).
- Textured stock (kraft, linen): raise error correction to Q/H and add ~25% size.
- Logo or artwork in the code: the art consumes error-correction budget, not resolution — size stays the same, but use level H. Why art codes still scan.
Can a QR code be too big?
Practically, no — phones scan large codes from close up without trouble. The real ceiling is convenience: a person standing 40 cm from a 1-meter code will have to step back. Size for the farthest realisticscanner, not the largest wall you have.
Test before the print run
- Generate the code in the free generator and export vector SVG/PDF at final size — scaling a small PNG up blurs module edges.
- Print one proof at actual size on the actual material.
- Scan from the real distance, with an older phone if you can find one, in the dimmest realistic light.
- If it hesitates: bigger, higher contrast, or shorter URL — in that order.
FAQ
What's the absolute minimum for any QR code? About 1 × 1 cm for a very short URL in perfect print — but below 1.5 cm you're relying on everyone having a recent phone. Don't design for the best case.
Does higher error correction change the size? Indirectly — levels Q/H add redundancy data, which can bump the code to a higher version (more modules). If size is critical, use M and protect the code from damage instead.
Inches or centimeters? The rule is unit-free: distance ÷ 10, in whatever unit you measure the distance.
